The goal of the game is to advance the ball into a special area at each end of the field called an end zone. Each team consists of 11 players, including a quarterback who calls the plays for his team. The other team, called the defense, tries to stop the offensive team and force it to give up possession of the ball. When the defense successfully stops the offense, they switch roles (the defensive team goes on offense, and the offensive team goes on defense).

The offensive teams are allowed four chances to gain 10 yards, which are called “downs.” If they fail to make it ten yards in four attempts, they must punt the ball downfield (giving their opponents the opportunity to start closer to their own goal-line), or attempt a touchdown, which is worth six points.

A play begins with the center player snapping the ball up into the air, and then the quarterback gives the signal for what type of play to run. The quarterback may throw the ball to a fullback, tight end, wide receiver, or running back. If the play is a running play, the running back takes the ball from the quarterback and runs with it. The quarterback can also run with the ball if needed.
