Basketball is a team sport that requires players to pass and shoot the ball through a basket. The game was developed in 1891 by a Canadian physical education teacher named James Naismith. He nailed a peach basket to an elevated track and used it as a way for his students to practice passing, dribbling and shooting while moving around the court. The basket had a bottom, but Naismith removed it to allow the balls to be easily retrieved after each shot.

A typical game of basketball is played for a set amount of time, and the team with the most points wins. The game is divided into quarters of varying length, and there are gaps of several minutes between each. If the score is tied at the end of regulation, overtime periods of varying length are played until a winner is determined.

Each team has five players on the floor at any given time, and unlimited substitutions are allowed. The rules of the game include a Jump Ball rule that determines who gets possession when the ball is deadlocked. In addition, a Shot Clock gives a team a limited amount of time (24 seconds in the NBA) to throw the ball at the hoop after gaining possession. Failure to do so results in a turnover.

Shooting a basket in basketball requires precise aiming and strong lift from the legs. The most common shot is a layup, but the game also features a jump shot and free-throw shots. In order to develop these skills, players must regularly work on fundamentals like hand-eye coordination and footwork. They must also understand their strengths and weaknesses, and use the areas where they struggle to improve.
