The Basics of Basketball

The players also have to take no more than a couple steps without dribbling, or they must stop and dribble the ball again. This is called traveling.

A player can shoot a basket by placing the ball on the tips of their dominant hand, usually the right, and then extending it over the head. When the player releases the ball, it usually travels in a smooth arc towards the basket, though there are many variations on how to shoot. A shot that misses the rim completely is sometimes called a brick, while a shot that hits the backboard or the side of the basket is often referred to as an air ball.
