The Basics of Football


Football is an American sport that involves two teams of 11 players. Each player has a specific position that they are assigned to, such as a wide receiver or defensive back. While the majority of the players on a football team are offense players, there are also specialized defense and kicker players. Each team has a playbook with dozens to hundreds of plays. Some plays are safer and may only gain a few yards, while others have greater risk but could lead to a long gain or even a touchdown.

During each play, the offensive team has four attempts, known as downs, to advance 10 or more yards from their original starting point on the field. If the team does not gain 10 or more yards in four downs, they must punt the ball to the other team. The other team then receives the ball at their original starting point for the next down.

A play begins when the quarterback, or QB, loudly calls out a play in code to the center. The center then snaps the ball to the QB, who can either throw or hand off the ball. The rest of the team, which is considered to be on offense, blocks the defense while the running backs or tight ends take the ball and run with it.

While any sport is good for a person’s overall development, the best all-around sports are those that involve the whole body and encourage social interaction.
